There is something incredibly special about having multiple generations of a family together in one photograph. Kids grow, families change, and these are the portraits that become more meaningful with every passing year.
This recent extended family photography session in Phoenix, Arizona brought grandparents, mom, and four little ones together for a beautifully simple studio session focused entirely on their relationships.
Timeless Multi-Generational Family Portraits
For this session, we kept everything classic with a clean white studio background and coordinated neutral wardrobe. Photographing the session in black and white gave the finished portraits a timeless quality and kept the attention exactly where it belonged—on the people.
We created the traditional extended-family portrait with everyone together, but we didn’t stop there.
One of my favorite things about extended family sessions is creating all of the smaller combinations within the family: grandparents with their grandchildren, mom with her children, siblings together, individual portraits of each child, and those sweet interactions that happen naturally in between.
Those smaller groupings are often the photographs families end up loving just as much as the big group portrait.
